Met Théophile a few months back at what's probably the best hangout for food lovers in Brussels, Les Petits Bouchons. He was telling us about his project: opening a restaurant in Champagne, in the village of Essoyes. The guy was enthusiastic and infectious, drank well, cooked well, and had Tom's blessing … that was all it took for this future gem to land firmly on our "to eat list."
Essoyes being located – sometimes things work out perfectly – at almost the exact midpoint between Brussels and Samoëns, this gourmet stop went from tempting to unmissable. The menu is simple, indulgent, unpretentious, and seasonal.
Two starters, two mains, two desserts, with the option to add some charcuterie and cheese. The wine list is (already) incredibly well-stocked and full of tricks to set any reader dreaming.
The vibe is friendly and joyful, you feel at home right away … exactly what you want from a proper village bistro. And to top it off, the prices are what you'd charge your friends.
The village in question also happens to be quite pretty, so this gourmet stop has all it takes to become a habit on the holiday route and even a destination in its own right. Long live L'Union … and here's to next time!
